FLAG FOOTBALL LEAGUE
Welcome to the Youth American Flag Football League (YAFFL), the first youth flag football league of its kind in Southern Africa, officially launched in April 2024.
YAFFL was created to provide young athletes with a structured and accessible platform to participate in one of the world's fastest-growing sports while promoting values such as teamwork, discipline, leadership, and sportsmanship.
Flag football is a fast-paced, non-contact version of American football in which players stop a play by removing a flag attached to the ball carrier instead of making a tackle. The sport combines athleticism, speed, strategy, and teamwork, making it an exciting and inclusive game for players of all backgrounds and experience levels.
Since its launch, YAFFL has experienced remarkable growth. In 2026, the league expanded to three age divisions: U13, U15, and U17. Currently, the major developments and league activities take place in the Provinces Gauteng and the Eastern Cape.
With a strong focus on accessibility, inclusivity, and development, YAFFL creates opportunities for young athletes from all backgrounds to participate, compete, and grow through sport. Since its launch in 2024, YAFFL has become the leading platform for youth flag football in South Africa, driving the growth and development of the sport while inspiring the next generation of players.
JULY 2026
One of YAFFL's founding teams, the Eldorado Park Eagles, made history in 2026 by winning the South African U13 qualifier and earning the opportunity to represent the country at the NFL FLAG Africa Championship in Nairobi, Kenya.
Competing against teams from across the continent, the Eagles delivered an outstanding performance, recording impressive victories over Egypt and the host nation, Kenya, before securing the bronze medal and finishing as the third-best U13 flag football team in Africa.
For many of the players, the tournament was about much more than football. It was their first flight, their first trip outside South Africa, and their first opportunity to experience another country and culture.
The success of the Eldorado Park Eagles highlights the growth of YAFFL and the opportunities the league is creating for young athletes across South Africa. We are excited to see which YAFFL team will earn the chance to represent South Africa on the international stage next year.
